Swanger Concurs with Grand Jury Recommendations for State Legislature
On the heels of a grand jury report which recommended numerous changes to the manner in which the Pennsylvania General Assembly conducts business, state Rep. RoseMarie Swanger (R-Lebanon) issue the following statement:
“I wholeheartedly agree with many of the suggestions the grand jury made, a few of the obvious ones being the combining of House Democratic and Republican print shops, information technology departments and personnel offices. Among the four caucuses, House Republicans have been the most proactive, already enacting a number of changes in order to streamline operations and increase efficiency; however, we can go even further in finding ways to be better stewards of taxpayer dollars while effecting a leaner form of state government.
“Of all the proposals made by the grand jury, the one I stand behind most passionately is the charge that a constitutional convention be organized to evaluate the situation and recommend solutions to the bloated form of state government under which we now operate. I have called for a citizens’ constitutional convention since taking office, and feel it is the only way to effectively engage and amplify the voice of the people of Pennsylvania who send us to Harrisburg.
“Opinions differ on whether or not a smaller Legislature would satisfactorily serve our constituents. The debate goes on regarding term limits and length of terms for members of the House and Senate. A limited constitutional convention is the best way to address these topics and get a feel for what the people of Pennsylvania want in their state government.”
